Short-term restorative care

Short-term restorative care is a specialized program aimed at assisting individuals to either reverse or slow down the difficulties they are facing when carrying out their daily tasks.

What is Short-term restorative Care?

Short-term restorative care involves a team of healthcare professionals who are dedicated to helping you manage or adjust to changes in your needs. The program is personalized and tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. This may include a combination of exercises and activities to improve strength and balance, access to mobility aids, and dietary assistance from a qualified dietician.

In addition, minor home modifications such as installing bathroom rails may also be arranged to ensure your safety and independence. If you're interested in regaining your earlier levels of independence, short-term restorative care may be an ideal option for you. It can even help delay the need for long-term care and support services.

How does it work?

Your provider of short-term restorative care will collaborate with you to pinpoint your objectives. Subsequently, they will assemble a group of healthcare specialists to assist you in achieving them, comprising of a physician to address any medical concerns.

Your loved ones and acquaintances are urged to partake in your treatment. The program is most effective when you have the encouragement of family, friends, and healthcare professionals.

What services Can I receive?

Short-term restorative care services are selected based on a medical assessment conducted by a doctor to ensure your specific medical needs are met. Your input will also be taken into consideration while selecting the services. Some of the services that may be provided as part of the program include, but are not limited to:

  • Provision of aids and equipment, including mobility aids

  • Audiology

  • Chiropractic services

  • Continence management

  • Cooking assistance

  • Home maintenance

  • Nursing

  • Nutrition and dietary advice, including meal preparation and dietetics

  • Personal care and assistance

  • Physiotherapy and occupational therapy

  • Podiatry for foot care

  • Psychologist or counselor support

  • Social work

  • Speech therapy

  • Support services such as cleaning or laundry, medication management, and emotional support therapy groups

  • Transport assistance

  • Accommodation in a residential care facility

What will it cost?

Short-term restorative care services require a contribution towards the cost of care and services, if you can afford it. There's no requirement for a means assessment to access the program.

The cost you pay is dependent on the level and type of care and services you receive. The maximum amount you may be asked to pay is:

  • Variable if you receive care while at home or in the community.

  • $58.98 per day if you receive care while in a residential setting (85% of the single age pension).

 

These costs are indexed to the age pension and updated twice a year.

 

If you move between different settings during your care, the rate you pay will depend on where you stay overnight.

Where do I receive services and for how long?

Short-term restorative care can be delivered in diverse settings, including your residence, the community, an aged care facility, or a combination of these locations. For instance, it may entail addressing a fall risk in your house and attending a physiotherapy session in the community. Regarding the duration, you can access short-term restorative care for a maximum of eight weeks, twice within a 12-month span.

How do I become eligible?

If you are a senior who desires to maintain your autonomy and avoid prolonged permanent care, you may qualify for short-term restorative care, provided that you:

  • Require assistance with daily activities.

  • Experience mental or physical decline, or both, such as significantly reduced walking pace, difficulty holding or grasping items, decreased physical or mental engagement, heightened exhaustion, and unintentional weight loss.
